The Off The Fence Internship was set up in 2017, with the first batch of interns joining us in September 2017. The internship is a training programme with a national recognised qualification –a level 5 Volunteering Skills Award- aimed at graduates and gap year students to enable them to develop new skills and practical experience for both their career and personal development.

Our first ‘batch’ of amazing interns- Matt, Denise and Becky- have proved to be invaluable this year. All three have thrown themselves willingly into all aspects of life at Off The Fence, for example,  Becky took part in a freezing and very wet November Night Walk barely a week after arriving in the UK from Brisbane. Since arriving, Becky has been involved with all three frontline areas of Off The Fence, Matt has led a weekly Night Outreach team with Antifreeze and coordinated the Christmas day outreach. Denise has shared her Italian heritage with clubs in schools and the Gateway clients alike, and has initiated the Spiritual ‘Thought for the Week’ at Gateway.

Denise says about her work with the homeless community in Antifreeze, “It was interesting to listen to their stories. What has touched me the most is the fact that some of them are always smiling. The clients in Antifreeze are people who have encouraged me and lifted my day up just by talking and laughing with them.”  

Moving forward, Matt has just completed his year with us and has hopefully passed his level 5 Volunteering Skills Award.  Denise has applied to stay with us longer after a break in Italy with family over the summer. When she returns she would love to focus on aspects of human trafficking and extending her prayer support of the Gateway ladies. Becky will be with us until at least Christmas and we have Marco & Federica from Milan joining us in September who will be specialising in street  outreach  and signposting to other agencies and Antifreeze Day Centre.

Each of the project managers have provided the interns with opportunities to develop and lead projects, work as a team, energize and introduce new ideas to the projects and empower the clients.
