A group of women from the Gateway Women's Centre enjoyed a visit from the Stoneham Bakehouse who recently hosted a "Baking for Wellbeing" workshop. The session was a great success and gave the group an opportunity to make their own flatbread and to bake a mini granary loaf to take home. One of the ladies said, "I could have kneaded all day - it was very relaxing". For others the smell of baking bread brought back many happy memories of baking bread at school or baking for their children when they were young.
Many of the women who attend Gateway experience mental health issues so it was particularly encouraging to hear Simon's story of how he had made big changes in his life to overcome depression and how taking a bread baking course started him on the road to recovery.
The women have not stopped talking about the session and have commented that the workshop was great fun, it helped them to connect with other women who come to Gateway, taught them something new, was a relaxing experience, and some said that it had even encouraged them to try baking bread at home. Simon's relaxed and approachable style helped to make the session such a success. It has been great to chat and laugh with the women about such a positive, shared experience.
We are extremely grateful to our sponsors whose donation made the workshop possible.
